The excitation spectra of the blue fluorescence of (Er3+,Na+) centre i
n CdF2:Er3+, Na+ and (Er3+,F-i(-)) centre in CaF2:Er3+ were recorded,
at 77K, between 15350 and 15850 cm(-1). In this spectral range, two ex
cited state transitions I-4(13/2) --> F-4(5/2) and S-4(3/2) --> (4)G(7
/2) were identified. The mechanism responsible for the blue fluorescen
ce of (Er3+,Na+) centre is a three-step absorption process via the lon
g-lived metastable levels I-4(13/2) and S-4(3/2).
