Abstract
We have started to study the feasibility of a frequency standard based on the electric quadrupole transition 4S(1/2)-3D(5/2) of calcium ions confined in a radio frequency trap. The storage conditions were optim ized using two electronic detection techniques. The resonance transiti on has then been observed with a very good signal to noise ratio.
