Sl. Rosenthal et al., EXPERIENCE WITH SIDE-EFFECTS AND HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH NORPLANT(R) IMPLANT USE IN ADOLESCENTS, Contraception, 52(5), 1995, pp. 283-285
Levonorgestrel implants (Norplant(R)) have been recommended as a contr
aceptive method for teenage women. Our experience suggests that the us
e of Norplant(R) implants in adolescents is associated with bleeding i
rregularities and modest weight gain. There is no effect on condom use
or STD acquisition. Despite the bleeding irregularities, we documente
d high continuation rates, suggesting that with appropriate pre-insert
ion counseling, Norplant(R) implants can be a successful contraceptive
method for adolescent women.
