Abstract
Thorough investigation of reported cases of elder maltreatment is nece ssary to determine the validity of the allegations and to identify vic tims to whom protective services should be offered. This paper discuss es the process of a comprehensive investigation, including the goals a nd steps involved. Information which should be elicited from reporters , collaterals, and existing documents is identified. Guidelines are pr ovided for interviewing suspected victims and offenders. Specialized d iagnostic evaluations may aid in determining the validity of allegatio ns and assessing the impact of maltreatment on the victim. Clear, deta iled documentation of findings is necessary, as is careful decision-ma king concerning whether or not to substantiate the allegations. Guidan ce is provided for completing these investigatory tasks.
