Hj. Wharrad et al., THE USE OF POSTERS IN THE TEACHING OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES ON AN UNDERGRADUATE NURSING COURSE, Nurse education today, 15(5), 1995, pp. 370-374
Posters are commonly used at research conferences for communicating in
formation and in education as an alternative way of teaching and asses
sing students. We report the use of posters as a means of teaching and
assessing part of the biological sciences component of an undergradua
te nursing course. Tutors felt it was a valuable exercise enabling stu
dents to develop a number of skills, alongside the learning and revisi
on of knowledge, including working as a team, condensing information a
nd word and graphic processing. Students evaluated the exercise as bei
ng challenging but rewarding and preferred to be assessed by this meth
od than by oral presentations or examinations. Lecturers and guided st
udy/tutorials were preferred to posters as teaching methods.
