A method to take advantage of high-spatial-frequency surface-relief gr
atings as polarizing beam splitters is described. The analogy between
that kind of grating and a volume grating is the basis of the theoreti
cal predictions. Results of rigorous calculations are presented. High
polarizing performances are demonstrated. We illustrate the method wit
h a practical realization that checks the validity of the calculations
