The Commission of the European Communities has been funding research p
rojects to develop an understanding of chemical and physical phenomena
related to industrial hazards, such as toxic and flammable releases a
nd explosions. These projects result in predictive models and experime
ntal data. To make these models and data available for a wider communi
ty and to judge their areas of application, the REDIPHEM project (REvi
ew and DIssemination of PHysical Effect Models) was started. This proj
ect covers two topics: heavy gas dispersion and source terms. This pap
er describes the activities and status of REDIPHEM. Moreover, it addre
sses the problems related to the design of a statistical validation ex
ercise for heavy gas models.
