Confidentiality has long been a cornerstone of trust in the profession
al relationship between psychologists and their clients. Developments
in computer technology, litigation, insurance reimbursement schemes, a
nd changing lifestyles are forcing psychologists to reconsider and ref
ine their approach to respecting this important ethical principle. Thi
s article reviews basic concepts on the matter, and discusses these in
light of evolving issues in practice, technology, and the law. Some c
ontrasts in legal and ethical aspects of confidentiality between Austr
alia and the United States are discussed. Recommendations for enhancin
g attention to confidentiality in one's practice are included.
