In the present study experiments are carried out to measure the notch
strength of alumina ceramics. Test results show that the notch strengt
h of ceramics, sigma(N), follows the normal distribution and the flexi
ble strength of ceramics, sigma(bb), also follows the normal distribut
ion. Analysis of the test results of the notch strength of ceramics sh
ows that there is a correlation between the mean values of the notch a
nd flexible strength of K-t .sigma(N) = sigma(bb), and the product of
the standard deviation of the notch strength, s(N) and the stress conc
entration factor. K-t, is equal to s(f), the standard deviation of the
flexible strength i.e. K(t)s(N) = s(t). As a result, the probability
distribution of the notch strength can be predicted from that of the f
lexible strength of ceramics tested under identical conditions.
