The phenomenon of ageing and the aged persons create some specific pro
blems in human society. These vary community to community reflecting c
onspicuous biocultural perspectives which needs to be studied to highl
ight the overall phenomenon. In the present paper, the authors have ma
de an attempt to see, by making a cross-cultural study into the condit
ions, needs and problems of the aged with special reference to North E
ast India in an urban setting.
