Recently, there has been an increased demand for small and medium size
d brushless-type synchronous motors. Among these types, hysteresis mot
ors have been especially used in those applications requiring precise
speed and constant starting torque capabilities. In the past, several
digital techniques for simulating the performance of hysteresis motors
have been developed. These techniques, however, involved significant
approximations to the rotor magnetic properties. The purpose of this p
aper is to present a numerical approach through which exact rotor magn
etic properties can be incorporated in the developed simulation techni
ques by utilizing Preisach-type hysteresis models. Numerous simulation
s for a sample 3-phase motor have been performed. It is found that pre
dicted v-i characteristics qualitatively matches Similar published exp
erimental results. Other results concerning the developed torque and h
armonic content are also given in the paper.
