The magnetic properties of ultrathin Fe83B9Nb7Cu1 nanocrystalline allo
y ribbons with 7 similar to 12 mu m thickness and effect of insulation
coating on ultrathin ribbons a ere investigated. It was found that ef
fective permeability at the frequency below 100 kHz decreased and coer
cive force increased with decreasing the ribbon thickness. However, re
duction of ribbon thickness to 7 mu m was very effective to improve re
markably their permeability and the core loss characteristics up to th
e MHz frequency range. Furthermore, the soft magnetic properties were
largely enhanced by surface coating comparing to that of the uncoated
ribbons. From these results, we could produce new core materials with
very low magnetic loss applicable to MHz excitations.
