Tomato chloroplasts carrying. different genes of resistance to tobacco
mosaic virus were analyzed by structure and function upon infection w
ith various virus strains. The composition of membrane and soluble chl
oroplast proteins was studied by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel
s. Low-temperature fluorescence spectra of leaf discs showed that, in
plants with yellow-green mosaic, Photosystem II activity is inhibited.
The determination of the chloroplast transcriptional activity was fou
nd to be significantly reduced in plants with pronounced disease sympt
oms.
