[Er-14(C-2)(2)(N)(2)]I-24 (triclinic, P (1) over bar, a = 966.3(4) pm,
b = 1027.6(2) pm, c = 1665.4(4) pm, alpha = 101.374(9)degrees, beta =
92.853(14)degrees, gamma = 112.83(2)degrees, Z = 2) is obtained as re
d-brown single crystals through a conproportionation reaction of ErI3
and erbium in the presence of carbon and NaN3 in a sealed niobium cont
ainer. It contains discrete, tetrameric [Er-14(C-2)(2)(N)(2)] clusters
that are built from two octahedra and two tetrahedra connected via co
mmon edges, The octahedral voids are filled with C, units and the tetr
ahedral voids with N atoms. Each discrete [Er-14(C-2)(2)(N)(2)] cluste
r is surrounded by 32 iodide ligands which connect six clusters via i-
a and a-a bridges.
