The mandate of the International Consultative Group on Food Irradiatio
n has been further extended to 1999 and the significance of the work o
f the Group seems likely to grow in the wake of the completion of the
Uruguay Round of GATT. The future emphasis of the work is likely to be
devoted to gaining greater acceptance of the use of irradiation as a
quarantine treatment for fruit and vegetables and to providing clear f
actual information to the food industry and consumers to counter conti
nuing doubts about irradiated food.
