A photoactive monolayer of an amphiphilic 13-membered azo-phane shows
no variation of area per molecule during photoinduced isomerization. T
he surface potential and Brewster angle reflectivity feature a selecti
vity and sensitivity for sodium ions in the subphase. The metal ions d
o not influence the reversible Z E isomerization, as concluded from re
flection spectroscopic measurement. This photoactive monolayer, theref
ore, is an example of a new type of sodium optrode.
