Structures which can be considered to be built up from slabs of identi
cal material, each displayed by a constant amount with respect to its
neighbours, are described in terms of the shift lattice and the genera
l form of their diffraction patterns has been derived. The theory is i
llustrated by reference to the (M,Ti)O-2-x crystallographic shear (CS)
structures, the alloy Au5Mn2 antiphase domain structure and a number
of hypothetical constructions.
