SYNTHESIS OF 2,2'-ARYLAZOMETHYLENE-BIS(1,8-NAPHTHYRIDINES) AS POTENTIAL ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS

2,2' Arylazomethylene-bis (1,8-naphthyridines) (4) have been synthesiz ed by the condensation of 2-aminoraicotinaldehyde (1) with 1-arylazo-1 -(1,8-naphthyridin-2-yl)-propanones (3). The intermediate 3 were obtai ned by the condensation of 1 with arylazoacetylacetones (2) in 1 : 1 m olar proportions. Alternatively, 4 could be obtained in a single step by treatment of 2 with two moles of 1. The structural assignments of t he products are based on their elemental analyses and spectral data. T hese compounds have been tested for their antimicrobial activity.
