AN EXPLORATORY NUMERICAL-MODEL OF SEDIMENT DEPOSITION OVER TIDAL SALTMARSHES

This paper describes an exploratory numerical model of sediment transp ort and deposition on an idealized tidal salt marsh. The mass transpor t equation is simplified to make it hyperbolic in one space dimension and time. The box scheme is used for the numerical solution and this i s satisfactorily checked against an exact solution for a particular ca se. Difficulties encountered in the numerical solution for the flood a nd ebb tides are discussed. The results from using the programme on se diment made up of a population of different sized particles are in qua litative agreement with observations on the Severn Estuary and the Lin colnshire and Norfolk coasts.
