Abstract
We present bidirectional transmission experiments with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) without optical isolators. It is shown that th e amplifier does not increase the bidirectional crosstalk from Rayleig h backscattering, provided that the gain of the amplifier is smaller t han the transmission losses of the fibers connected to it.
