This article provides a brief review of the evolution and current stat
us of rehabilitation counseling. Rehabilitation counseling practice is
described along with the required competencies of rehabilitation coun
selors in providing services to individuals with disabilities. The pro
fessional status of the discipline is reviewed in terms of programs fo
r educational preparation, professional associations, accreditation, r
egulation of practice, ethical mandates, and research. Finally, contin
uing challenges for the discipline are identified.
