P. Westermark et al., APOLIPOPROTEIN A1-DERIVED AMYLOID IN HUMAN AORTIC ATHEROSCLEROTIC PLAQUES, The American journal of pathology, 147(5), 1995, pp. 1186-1192
Amyloid deposits in the aortic intima are very common in association w
ith atherosclerosis and aging. In the present study, a major fibril pr
otein purified form amyloid present in human athero-sclerotic plaques
was shown to be a 69-amino acid N-terminal fragment of apolipoprotein
Al. Although a senile form of localized apolipoprotein al-derived amyl
oidosis has recently been documented in pulmonary vessels of dogs, thi
s is the first example of a localized human amyloid derived from this
apolipoprotein.
