Calculations are presented that suggest coherent oscillations in the e
lectronic state populations of an electron transfer reaction in a pola
r solvent can be induced by subjecting the system to a sequence of mon
ochromatic laser pulses on the picosecond time scale. These oscillatio
ns are produced by pumping the system between different steady state d
istributions attained in the presence and absence of a strong continuo
us-wave electric field. The amplitude and rise time of these time-depe
ndent oscillations may be altered by changing the pulse duration and t
he electric field strength. The experimental realization of the propos
ed scheme will require strong electric fields (approximate to 10(7) V/
cm), and the effect will be most pronounced for activationless reactio
ns.
