Tm. Chen et al., PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AMPHIPHILIC ACRYLAMIDIC POLYMERS WITH LIPID SIDE-CHAINS, Macromolecules, 28(23), 1995, pp. 7711-7716
A phospholipid-like acrylamidic monomer with both a long alkyl chain a
s the hydrophobic group and a phosphatidylcholine analogue as the hydr
ophilic group was newly synthesized and characterized. The homopolymer
ization and copolymerization with acrylamide were carried out in the p
resence of a radical initiator. The obtained polymers were characteriz
ed by FT-NMR, IR, and melting points. From the X-ray diffraction measu
rements, the structures proposed for monomer, homopolymer, and copolym
er are basically constructed from alternately stacked bilayers with hy
drophilic and hydrophobic regions of the monomer or the side chain, th
e bilayer structures of which are similar to that found for lipid bila
yers. The thermal properties of monomer and polymers were also studied
by DSC measurements.
