Abstract
The archaeological remains of the Japanese lighthouse at Dalap, in Leb inaw Village, Gagil Municipality, Yap State, Federated States of Micro nesia, are described and interpreted. Yapese lighthouse builders were interviewed, and details of their construction efforts and their warti me recollections and experiences are presented. A contemporary Yapese dance chant, which includes references to the American bombing of the lighthouse, is included as part of the oral history of this traumatic time in Yap.
