The archaeological remains of the Japanese lighthouse at Dalap, in Leb
inaw Village, Gagil Municipality, Yap State, Federated States of Micro
nesia, are described and interpreted. Yapese lighthouse builders were
interviewed, and details of their construction efforts and their warti
me recollections and experiences are presented. A contemporary Yapese
dance chant, which includes references to the American bombing of the
lighthouse, is included as part of the oral history of this traumatic
time in Yap.
