Dl. Carlson et al., MANAGEMENT OF DEMENTIA-RELATED BEHAVIORAL DISTURBANCES - A NONPHARMACOLOGIC APPROACH, Mayo Clinic proceedings, 70(11), 1995, pp. 1108-1115
Objective: To describe practical nonpharmacologic approaches to dement
ia-related behavioral problems for enhancement of the function and car
e of elderly patients with dementia. Design: We reviewed the pertinent
medical literature and summarized strategies and available resources
for management of geriatric patients with dementia and behavior proble
ms. Results: For optimal care of older patients with dementia, key con
cepts of related behavior problems must be understood, Agitation and a
ggression, resisting help with care, wandering, incontinence, sleep di
sturbance, and emotional lability can become difficult management issu
es with such patients, In some patients, these disruptions can lead to
overmedication and nursing home placement. Herein, practical nonpharm
acologic measures for management of behavior problems that arise among
community-dwelling and institutionalized elderly patients with dement
ia are discussed, Attention is directed to the medical, psychologic, e
nvironmental, and social factors that may contribute to unwanted behav
iors. Conclusion: Nonpharmacologic approaches can help ameliorate beha
vioral problems and assist in the overall care of elderly patients wit
h dementia.
