The rotation of the phenyl groups in 2,4-diphenylquinoline, C21H15N, a
nd its sterically hindered 3-methyl-2,4-diphenylquinoline derivative,
C22H17N, are compared. The comparison demonstrates that the orientatio
n of the phenyl substituents has a marked effect on the interpretation
of both the H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra of these compounds in solution.
