Abstract
ECDIS is about to become a commercial reality. However, the full poten tial of the system is not likely to be realised until Time Varying Obj ects (TVOs) like tides, currents etc., are incorporated to represent t he constantly changing conditions that meet the navigators every day. The relevant standards need to be urgently developed to prevent uncoor dinated development of incompatible systems. hh coordination of the ef forts of several Working Groups of IHO is required to provide a viable solution.
