The CT appearance of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is well documen
ted. The late features are usually those of atrophy, often bilateral a
nd commonly affecting both frontal and temporal lobes. Gyriform calcif
ication occurs rarely following HSE in infants but calcification in ad
ults has not been described. We present a case of acute HSE in whom de
nse temporal lobe calcification developed some months after the initia
l presentation.
