The chemical composition of skeletal calcite in the stem of living pen
tacrinid crinoids (Echinodermata) collected at depths from 100 to 1,00
0 m in the Pacific Ocean was analyzed. A correlation between the bioto
pe depth and Mg content or carbon isotope ratios in the columnal calci
te appears. The respective role of temperature, food supply, growth ra
te and adaptive strategy is discussed.
