Abstract
We show that, contrary to common wisdom, the maximum gain mode of semi conductor lasers subject to optical feedback is always stable. The min imum linewidth mode is shown to be subject to a Hopf bifurcation assoc iated with destabilizing the relaxation oscillations. This explains th e experimental observation of narrow-linewidth, single-mode diode lase rs operating with high optical feedback.
