We have measured the polarization rates of lines emitted after single-
electron capture occurring during Ar8+-Li collisions at an impact ener
gy of 80 keV. In order to obtain information on the final m(l) values
which are populated in the electron-capture process, we have also calc
ulated the polarization rates from the nlm(l) distributions determined
by using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method. The good
agreement which is obtained between the experimental and the calculat
ed polarization rates indicates the reliability of the CTMC method whi
ch predicts that m(l)=0, +/-1; and +/-2 are preferentially populated b
y the electron-capture process.
