The anodic oxygen evolution process, which accompanies the cathodic re
duction cyclization of 2-nitro-2'-hydroxy-5'-methylphenylazobenzene to
2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-methylphenyl)benzotriazole, is suggested for isolati
on of the benazole P from solution. The synthesis-isolation cycle can
be repeated in a diaphragm electrolyzer using one and the same solutio
n at least five times without degradation of the process and product p
arameters.
