Regularities of the electrochemical chlorination of arylsulfonamides s
uspended in an aqueous solution of NaCl were studied under conditions
of nondiaphragm electrolysis. It was established that, to suppress sid
e reactions, a temperature from 10 to 20 degrees C and highly concentr
ated solutions of NaCl should be used. This provided the efficient sal
ting out of the chlorinated products, namely, Na salts of N-chlorine d
erivatives of arylsulfonamides, during the electrolysis. The condition
s were found for a preparative electrosynthesis of salts of N-chlorine
derivatives of n-tolylsulfonamide, phenylsulfonamide, and n-chlorophe
nylsulfonamide with the product yield and the current efficiency of ta
rget products that are equal to 97% each, at 98% conversion of startin
g arylsulfonamides.
