The oxidation of 6-aminophenalenone by OH radicals was studied using p
ulse radiolysis. The formation of two oxidized forms of the dye was de
tected - a molecular cation-radical and an OH adduct. Absorption bands
with maxima at 420 (xi(max) = 1.500 +/- 200 m2/mole) and 670 nm (xi(m
ax) = 66 +/- 22 m2/mole) correspond to the former and bands with maxim
a at 340 (xi(max) = 580 +/- 100 m2/mole) and 390 nm correspond to the
latter. It was found that the disappearance of the two products occurs
mainly due to recombination reactions, but for the cation-radical rea
ction with water is also possible (k = 100 +/- 20 liter/mole.sec), the
product of which is an OH adduct of the dye.
