Abstract
A 76-year-old man developed endocarditis 24 years after he had receive d a Starr-Edwards Model 1000 cloth-covered steel ball prosthesis for s ymptomatic congenital bicuspid aortic stenosis. Blood cultures yielded Fusobacterium mortiferum in five sets. and he responded well to treat ment with intravenous penicillin. No additional surgery was needed, an d the patient remains well 5 years after treatment of his infection.
