The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the psychologi
cal correlates of people's health behaviors through the development of
an objective self-report instrument, the Multidimensional Health Ques
tionnaire (MHQ). Preliminary results results indicated that the subsca
les on the MHQ had high internal consistency and that individuals of v
arying ages were differentially characterized by several of specific h
ealth-related dispositions measured by the MHQ. Additional evidence re
vealed that several MHQ subscales were positively associated with peop
le's tendency to engage in a greater number of health-promoting behavi
ors, whereas only one MHQ subscale (i.e., health-depression) was negat
ively correlated with a health-promoting lifestyle.
