Recently worksite wellness programs (WWPs) have been incorporated into
many companies. Unfortunately many WWPs are plagued by low participat
ion rates. This study examined differences in selected cognitive, envi
ronmental, and social factors between WWP adherers, dropouts, and thos
e who have never participated in the WWP. Those who attend the WWP gen
erally were found to have higher levels of self-motivation, were encou
raged to participate by others more frequently, and perceived fewer ba
rriers to program participation than did dropouts and nonparticipants.
Attitudinal commitment to exercise did not differ across subgroups. I
nterestingly 16% of respondents prefer to exercise at a place other th
an the WWP.
