M. Chattopadhyay et al., ION-EXCHANGE CAPACITY OF THE BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF THE RIVER GANGA, Journal of the Indian Chemical Society, 70(1), 1993, pp. 56-58
The cation-exchange capacities of the river Ganga sediments have been
found to be appreciable from the estimates of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ s
uggesting appreciable mobilisation of clay minerals and nutrient load
necessary to sustain soil fertility. However the analysis of the resul
ts in terms of enrichment factors shows that there is considerable dep
letion of Na, K. Ca and Mg due to chemical erosion and these are trans
ported by the river water making the water rich in these ions.
