A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO RECENT ECOMARGE RESULTS

The ECOMARGE program deals with transfer of matter and energy on conti nental margins as well as the associated response of benthic ecosystem s. Two experimental sites (Gulf of Lions, Bay of Biscay) were studied. Improved technology and the design of new instruments were required i n order to accomplish the programme. The investigations and results ha ve progressively revealed the key role played by margins in all horizo ntal and vertical transport processes.
