Abstract
This review examines the absorptive functions and capacity of the larg
e intestine and ways in which the large bowel contributes to intestina
l conservation of nutrients and secretions, i.e. 'salvage'. The role o
f altered colonic transit in the pathophysiology of impaired salvage a
nd diarrhea is addressed.
