Connection control and the realization of Intelligent Network function
s in digital networks is supported by common channel signalling based
on the CCITT Signalling System No. 7. In this paper, a generic modelli
ng approach for the signalling network is developed which yields the l
oading of all network resources and the network performance. The model
s are obtained considering the signalling system protocol functions sp
ecified by the CCITT, as well as the information flows through these f
unctions. The approach allows the derivation of virtual processor mode
ls, which in a further step are mapped onto the implementation accordi
ng to individual architectures. Using these principles, a signalling n
etwork planning tool has been developed. The capabilities of the plann
ing tool are demonstrated by an example, where the new service Univers
al Personal Telecommunication (UPT) is introduced additionally to ISDN
and mobile communication services.
