Gloss decay and immobilization solids data show that water retention o
n a short-dwell-type coater depends on the coating water viscosity and
the capability of the coating to form a high solids cake barrier at t
he coating and paper interface. Clay-adsorbing thickeners give a highe
r degree of solids flocculation and lower immobilization solids as wel
l as better coverage, smoothness, and rotogravure printability than th
ickeners with low clay affinity
