The FRG-1 and FRG-2 research reactors at the GKSS Geesthacht Research
Center are of the swimming pool type- They have thermal powers of 5 MW
and 15 MW, respectively, and went critical for the first time in 1958
(FRG-1)and 1963 (FRG-2), respectively. They are mainly used for mater
ials research, isotope production, and neutron activation analysis. Bo
th research reactors are installed in the same reactor hall. As a cons
equence, they also have in common a large number of utility systems. A
s GKSS intends to operate especially the FRG-1 reactor for many more y
ears in order to meet research requirements, that reactor has been fit
ted experimental facilities (such as a cold neutron source). Both rese
arch reactors have been backfitted engineered safeguards systems as ti
me went on to ensure their safe and reliable continued operation over
the next few years.
