J. Torrecisneros et al., SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF ANTIMONY-RESISTANT VISCERAL LEISHMANIASIS WITH LIPOSOMAL AMPHOTERICIN-B IN PATIENTS INFECTED WITH HUMAN-IMMUNODEFICIENCY-VIRUS, Clinical infectious diseases, 17(4), 1993, pp. 625-627
We describe two cases of visceral leishmaniasis in patients infected w
ith human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); both cases were resistant to a
ntimony compounds but were cured with liposomal amphotericin B, with n
o significant toxicity. A review of the previous reported cases of ant
imony-resistant visceral leishmaniasis in HIV-infected patients confir
med the effectiveness of treatment with liposomal amphotericin B, whic
h directly targets infected macrophages and reaches high levels in pla
sma and tissue.
