Biogas containing 55 per cent or more methane can be produced from jut
e caddis-a lignocellulosic waste by anaerobic fermentation using cattl
e dung as a sole source of inoculum. The lag period for biogas product
ion from jute caddis is more in comparison to cattle dung as sole sour
ce of substrate but a pretreatment of NaOH to jute caddis can reduce t
he lag period significantly. Moreover jute caddis is able to supply hi
gher quantum of biogas due to its slow decomposition. In addition to t
hat the residual slurry after biogas production is suitable for good q
uality manure.
