Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), positioned by an endoscopic
pull-through technique, was first described in 1980(1) and is now com
monly used for the provision of a feeding enterostomy. The usual indic
ations are neurological or oropharyngeal disorders(2,3). Recognized co
mplications include colonic and gastric perforation, colocutaneous fis
tula, gastric outlet obstruction and gastric haemorrhage(2,4). The inc
idence of major complications varies from 1.3 to 19 per cent in publis
hed series(2,3,5).
