This paper is the first devoted to the drosophilid fauna of Sao Tome i
sland. In forty nine localities explored, almost all at sea level alon
g the coast, at least forty three species were collected belonging to
eight genera (Cacoxenus, Leucophenga, Chymomyza, Drosophila, Microdros
ophila, Mycodrosophila, Scaptomyza, and Zaprionus). Among them twenty-
seven species were already described in the literature; all of them, w
ith one exception (Zaprionus campestris) are recorded for the first ti
me from Sao Tome island (six species of Leucophenga, eighteen of Droso
phila, one of Microdrosophila and one of Zaprionus). Preliminary data
on geographical distribution of species, as well as data on their feed
ing and breeding substrates are also given.
