Abstract
The practical formulation of puppies' diet requires to estimate the en ergy requirements of growth. Up to date, it was estimated step by step , based on the percentage of growth. Considering it is possible to pre dict the adult weight of the dog knowing just the weight and the age o f the puppy, the authors have used that possibility to present a new a pproach which enables to calculate continously the energy requirement of the puppy at any time: BE(growth), (kcal ME/d) = C. BEE (kcal ME/d) ;where BEE is the puppy maintenance energy requirement at its actual w eight, and C a multiplicator: C = 3,2. e ((-0.87.P-0.1)); with P = the actual puppy weight (kg) I estimated adult body weight (kg); P is a v alue between 0 and 1. The proteic delivery is also presented, by an ea sy way, depending on the growth seep, and the kind of canine breed con sidered. The complete way of calculation, step by step, of a home made diet is then presented, followed by an example of home made diet diet ary plan for each kind of breed (very small, small, middle size, large and giant). This paper must allow the practitionner calculate a balan ced home made dietary plan for puppies from 3 months old to adult stat e.
