Abstract
Considered at the landscape scale, economically efficient multiple use of forests may require land-use specialization. If managers attempt t o satisfy legitimate multiple-use demands from society by managing all lands for all outputs, both commodity and amenity values of the fores t may be inappropriately supplied, and management inputs may be ineffi ciently deployed. These results run counter to some of the prescriptio ns called ''new forestry.''
